Two new Texas AFT surveys reveal the continuing damage—larger class sizes, loss of key services for struggling students and increased discipline problems—done by $5.4 billion in state cuts to public education while also highlighting the intent of school employees to be more politically active in support of candidates who pledge to reverse the cuts. The Monroe City School Board finance committee met on Tuesday, May 8, to discuss the end-of-the-year sales tax check (13th Check). The committee determined that:
• The checks were DOWN 34% from last year.
• Sales tax revenues were up 3.8% last year.
NO explanation was given to employees as to why their checks were drastically reduced. In fact, when employees peacefully demonstrated in the parking lot of the school board office on Wednesday, May 9, Superintendent Kathleen Harris told them:
• She would NOT talk with employees.
• She told employees to leave “private property.” That is PUBLIC PROPERTY!
• She called the police.
The Monroe Federation of Teachers condemns the disrespectful and unprofessional treatment of school employees by Superintendent Kathleen Harris.
You have a right to demand an official examination! You have a right to know where taxpayer dollars are going.
The Monroe Federation of Teachers wants answers - we call on the School Board to conduct an external audit.

The Maryland Senate has voted to shift of some of the cost of teacher pensions to Baltimore City and the state’s counties as part of an efforts to avoid more than $500 million in so-called Doomsday budget cuts originally scheduled to take effect on July 1.
The House voted 86-51 for the that will begin splitting teacher pension costs between the state and local jurisdictions over the next four years. In the Senate, the vote on the measure that included the teacher pension shift was 33-13.
AFT-Maryland and its affiliate, the Baltimore Teachers Union, have long opposed shifting the cost of pensions to local governments. Many local jurisdictions, such as the City of Baltimore, already suffer from budget deficits.

Did you know that the U.S. Social Security Administration stopped mailing annual paper statements last year to workers under age 60? It caused a congressional stir and drew criticism from the Government Accountability Office, even though the motive was to save $70 million annually in printing and mailing. On May 1, the Social Security Administration started making statements available online. Social Security commissioner Michael Astrue says every worker who will be eligible for Social Security should check his or her statement annually to ensure the accuracy of the earnings information. The statements, Astrue says, also help with financial planning.
